Beach Curry and Paella Night

On Thursday night (8th August) Abersoch Sailing Club hosted a Beach curry and paella night with Andy Teague as the resident chef.  After our shout out on Radio 2 just after the 8am news, the event went global which resulted in a surge of Social Members wanting to be part of this great little club and not to mention the chance of tasting the award winning Thai Green Curry and the Paella rustled up on the beach by our resident Galloping Gourmet!!

The weather was kind to the Club members who managed to get tickets to this gastronomic extravaganza which was followed by a game of highly competitive rounders organised by the Pritchard girls.

Many thanks to all who helped make the night happen.  Our next social event is the legendary Village Pub Crawl on Friday 16th August starting at the Vaynol at 8pm.

1st Weekend Series and the Waddington Cup

The 2019 ASC season kicks off tomorrow!

We have 2 B2B races tomorrow starting at 10:30 and are part of the 1st Weekend Series. We will also be racing for the Waddington Cup in our first race, a prize awarded to the winner of the first race of the season so there is plenty up for grabs tomorrow!

Sign on sheets can be found on the shelf and the decision to race will be made at 9 and will be posted on the ASC Facebook page and group.

ASC set for the new season!

In just over 4 days time the first sound signal of the new season will be heard and ASC’s 2019 sailing programme will be underway!

Up for grabs, this weekend is the 1st Weekend Series Cup as well as the Waddington Cup, awarded to the winner of the first race of the season. Whilst the cups may be hotly contested by all, our sailors will be keen to avoid winning one prize, the inflatable armbands, awarded to the first capsize of the year!

This season promises to be bigger and better than in 2018. The hugely popular Junior Race Training returns and will be taken by our newly qualified RYA Race Coaches whilst the ASC Long Distance Race has generated a lot of interest and is eagerly awaited having been blown off last year. Many of last years socials also make a return including the beach curry night and the club favourite village bar crawl (walk to the Vaynol, stay in the Vaynol, crawl home!).

It is never too late to get involved in ASC and with membership starting from £10, everyone can get involved! With an increased beach presence this year, come and have a chat with some of our members and hear about all the great things the club are up to.

See you on the water!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY ASC!! We are 1 today!

On May 14th 2018, Abersoch Sailing Club was formed and the current committee was elected via a Skype call.

That makes today officially Abersoch Sailing Club’s 1st Birthday!

The club has come a long way from its humble beginnings as a Facebook page set up to gauge interest in forming a dinghy sailing club, run by and for dinghy sailors in Abersoch.

From the official formation of the club, to gaining RYA Affiliation, to our first race on 28th July 2018, won by Jonathan Waddington in his Mirror (who actually started the race crossing the line the wrong way!) to our first every prize giving and AGM at the end of August and gaining 50+ members, ASC has achieved a remarkable amount in such a short space of time.

The racing has been close, competitive and fun for those competing and spectacular to watch for all those on shore. Our short start lines have led to competitive starts and our courses which are set daily provide excellent high-quality racing. Our use of average lap times has also led to racing becoming more accessible for beginners whilst allowing more seasoned racers to get their daily fix. We have also released out 2019 Sailing Programme which can be found on the club website.

We have also conducted popular Junior Race Training sessions on Monday mornings with the aim of supporting and improving the skills of our junior members. We held sessions dedicated to starts, boat handling and boat speed and saw real improvement in all those who took part which resulted in some of our junior members placing well and winning prizes at the end of season prize giving – signs of real encouragement for all. The dates for this year’s sessions can also be found in the 2019 Sailing Programme.

The club has also developed a thriving social scene and members have enjoyed a variety of socials from beach curry nights to a village bar crawl as well as club meetups in the Vaynol over the holidays. We are also pleased to introduce a social membership for 2019 for members who would like to support the club off the water.

Looking forward to 2019, we are delighted to host Lancaster University Sailing Club for a weekend of sailing and racing in late June as well as the introduction of our Fun Race, which will be held Bank Holiday Monday at the end of August which is open to members and non-members alike. Furthermore, there is plenty of sailing to be done and prizes to be handed out!

As we move forward, we strive to keep the club’s ethos at the centre of everything we do – provide high-quality dinghy sailing for an affordable price.

We look forward to seeing you all out on the water, here is to another fantastic summer of sailing!

ASC hits the water for the first time

Today history has been made.  Many thanks to all who took part in the first Junior race training session.  2 Mirror Dinghies, 2 Topaz and a Laser.  All sailed really well in some damp, soggy and cold conditions this morning, but you will all go down in the history of Abersoch Sailing Club.

This afternoon was the first time we raced as a club and 5 boats out was a very pleasing start to our future.  Three Lasers a Topaz and a Mirror Dinghy all competed in two races.  The wind had shifted from the morning race training session which meant a re jig of the course but we got the first race under way.  With another re jig of the course for the second race with conditions that could only be described as champagne sailing it was a fantastic race.  The new buoys worked perfectly along with the loud starting system designed by our very own Vice Commodore.

At the end of the day all returned safely to shore and with a head count to confirm all were land bound a celebratory beer was opened.  Fab day had by all.

Thanks for James and Jack for their help today

The ASC Team

Sunday 29th July

Good Morning.
The weather down on the beach is wet and wild. I have therefore made a decision to cancel today’s race as the forecast is not show the wind to drop until later today.
The plan is to run some junior race training tomorrow from 10:30 hrs to 12:30 hrs. Even if the weather is not great we can do some bits on the beach with the dinghies and run through some of the racing rules, adults may want to listen in to.
Monday afternoon we will then try and catch up with the races we have missed this weekend

Race day info

Our plan is to race on Saturday Morning at 10:30 hrs. There will be 2 races Back to back.
I have attached a membership card that has some information on it for you.

The plan is that we have either morning or afternoon starts. In the event of a morning start a decision will be made to race at 09:00 hrs, for a 10:30 hrs start. If the weather is not looking good we can postpone to an afternoon start.

Afternoon starts will be at 14:00 hrs and a decision will be made at 12 noon as to weather we will race.

By using this method we hope not to keep people hanging around all day

A trailer about halfway down the beach will be the base for the tally board and course description.
Please ensure you tally on and Tally off. Sue Teague will be there to coordinate things. A briefing will be given before the first race each day so all are aware of the course

We will use Facebook and The Website to keep you up to date
